At the Center for Surgical Science (CSS) we are looking for a highly motivated and experienced Chief Data Scientist to join our Big Data & Personalized Medicine (BDPM) section and become part of a multidisciplinary team aiming to improve healthcare for the surgical patient.

Responsibilities:

• Manage the day-to-day operations of the data science team, including project prioritization, resource allocation, and mentorship of team members.
• Collaborate with other departments to ensure data science projects align with research goals and objectives.
• Develop and implement data science strategies and roadmaps that align with the unit’s overall vision and mission.
• Designing and implementing studies on translational, clinical and real-world data, to answer valuable clinical questions.
• Stay up-to-date with the latest data science tools and techniques, and evaluate their potential impact on the organization.
• Ensure that the team is following best practices for data management and data analysis.
• Communicate findings and insights to stakeholders in a clear and concise manner.
• Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and business partners to identify opportunities for data science projects.
• Participate in the hiring process for new data science team members and provide mentorship and training to ensure their success.
• Actively participate in scientific writing and funding applications.

Your Profile

Expected qualifications:

• Master’s and/or PhD degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Machine Learning or a related field.
• 5+ years of experience in data science or a related field, with 5+ years of experience in managing data science teams.
• Strong knowledge of statistical analysis, machine learning, and data mining techniques.
• Programming skills in languages such as Python or R.
• Strong communication skills and ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
• Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Experience with cloud platforms

The Center for Surgical Science

CSS currently consists of more than 50 employees. We are based in the Department of Surgery at Zealand University Hospital and our aim is to improve the treatment of patients with surgical diseases, minimize morbidity and optimize clinical outcomes. Through a cross-disciplinary research approach, we utilize the full spectrum of the available health information to tailor multi-modal interventions and characterize key issues for patients undergoing surgery in order to individualize pre-, intra- and postoperative treatment. As a world-class institution, we participate in key global research initiatives and have been recognized as a Danish and EU leading establishment in our respective fields.

We are running infrastructure developments within the area of surgical oncology based on Danish Health Data with integration of research-based translational OMICS data with the scope of providing cancer-specific solutions in predictive modelling. We have recently established a Scandinavian Consortium generating a data science infrastructure for federated learning based on health data and with the scope of implementing this in a clinical setting in Norway and Denmark.

The Big Data & Personalized Medicine section at CSS is providing the necessary infrastructure and support to the core clinical departments, in a common effort to achieve the centers’ targets. Our methods include the use of international health data standards and key open-source technologies to establish a common data platform compatible with the leading Personalized Medicine initiatives in Denmark, Europe and the rest of the world. Standardization, Quality Control and Quality Assurance are the key aspects of our operations.

While this position will not initially be focused solely on OMOP, we have a growing focus in that direction (we have multiple OMOP instances and are looking to push more users towards them), and I’d love to see some applicants from the OHDSI community. This is a full-time, permanent position on a team that primarily works remotely, so relocation would not be required if you already live within the United States.

Because this is a replacement position for a retiring team member, there are rather specific hard-skill requirements, particularly (1) expertise in ETL development, specifically with MS SQL Server, SSIS, and experience extracting from Epic Clarity to data models like PCORnet CDM or OHDSI OMOP, and (2) high proficiency in SQL, T-SQL, and a general or statistical programming language like Python or R.

Our research team at Stanford University is looking for a postdoctoral scholar in perinatal pharmacoepidemiology. The scholar will work closely with faculty members with expertise in epidemiology, medical informatics, and clinical medicine on NIH-funded research projects on the comparative safety and effectiveness of medications in pregnancy and related research topics. Our projects employ advanced analytical methods in large databases, including OHDSI network studies using claims data and electronic health record data in the OMOP CDM. Current topical focus areas include mental health, behavioral health and cardiovascular health of people who are pregnant or postpartum.

Our research group prioritizes a collaborative and inclusive team environment. The principal investigators, Drs. Stephanie Leonard and Brian Bateman, are experienced mentors who are highly committed to supporting the postdoctoral scholar in advancing their career as an independent investigator. Dr. Leonard co-leads the OHDSI Pregnancy and Reproductive Health Work Group (PRHeG). The postdoctoral scholar will have opportunities to both lead and contribute to research projects.

Senior Data Analyst
National Cancer Institute – Contractor Position

The National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG) has launched a new prospective cohort, Connect for Cancer Prevention Study, that will recruit 200,000 adults in the United States. The study was designed to further investigate the etiology of cancer and its outcomes by capitalizing on research innovations to advance the field of cancer epidemiology and prevention. Study participants will provide serial responses to questionnaires, donations of biospecimen, access to electronic medical records, and other sources of data for decades. The resulting data will be hosted by the NCI and made available to the scientific community following protocols to ensure the data is F.A.I.R. and protects study participants’ privacy.

Work description
DCEG is seeking a senior data analyst for the Connect data analytics team. The successful candidate for this position will assume data management and curation responsibilities for Connect. The candidate will work in a highly collaborative, cross functional development team on various project activities communicating actively and frequently with other team members as needed. Since this is a human subjects’ study, the analyst will need to remain cognizant of regulatory compliance with patient protections and pay strict attention to where data are and where data go.

Responsibilities:
• Implements data manipulation, cohort selection, variable derivation, statistical analyses of epidemiologic data, and production of results (tables, figures and reports) for presentation or publication, including validation and review of others’ programs all per literate programming practices
• Provides supervision, training, and guidance to junior team members
• Provides evaluation of data quality, including monitoring, troubleshooting and resolution of data errors
• Other job-related duties as assigned

Minimum qualifications:
• Master’s degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, statistics, data science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience (approximately 5 additional years of experience).
• 5 years of experience with large scale multi-source data collection and analysis. Analytical engagements outside class work while at school can be included.
• Proficiency with R, R Studio, and R Studio Connect.
• Proficiency with SQL or use of SQL in analytic software such as R or BigQuery in the Google Cloud Platform.
• Proficiency managing and manipulating data (e.g., data coding and cleaning) from longitudinal studies, electronic medical records, and/ or insurance claims.
• Ability to communicate effectively across various audiences
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with others on cross-team projects
• Excellent problem-framing, problem-solving, organizational skills, attention to detail, initiative, and multi-tasking.

Preferred qualifications:
• Ph.D. in epidemiology, biostatistics, statistics, data science, or a related field
• Experience with a cloud environment such as Google Cloud Platform or Amazon Web Services.
• Experience coding analytics in python.
• Degree or work experience in cancer biomedical research.
• Experience working with human subjects’ data.
