The Department of Preventive
Medicine anticipates the availability of two new pre-doctoral positions
in our training program in “Environmental Genomics,” supported by the National
Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
The aim of this program is to provide multidisciplinary training in
epidemiology, genetics, biostatistics, bioinformatics, and computational
biology to future researchers aiming to study environmental and genetic risk
factors in disease.

Pre-doctoral fellows may be
enrolled in any of the Ph.D. programs offered by the Department of Preventive
Medicine, but with particular priority for the programs in Epidemiology
(especially the environmental or molecular tracks), Statistical Genetics and
Genetic Epidemiology, or Biostatistics. For this round of applications from
candidates enrolled in doctoral programs in Bioinformatics or related “big
data” disciplines, including programs in other departments, are encouraged to
apply. Applicants must have an interest in environmental and genetic aspects
of disease and/or the development of relevant methodology and will be expected
to pursue a multidisciplinary approach towards their training. Awards may
be held for up to three years, effective September 1, 2015 (depending upon
position in the program at the time of the award), contingent upon annual
review of performance. No additional
duties (e.g., research or teaching assistant) beyond pursuit of the academic
degree will be expected.

Only U.S. citizens or permanent

Purpose & Scope:

This position will lead the group within global real-world informatics (RWI) center of excellence responsible for interfacing with the global functions (R&D, strategic marketing, medical affairs) to support their business needs. Purpose & Scope:

This position will lead the global real-world informatics (RWI) capability for the analytics execution – the design, building and execution of the ‘Analytics Service Center’ within the RWI function. This individual must work collaboratively with all parts of the Astellas business and other members of Astellas’ RWI CoE.

A successful individual in this role will be able to apply the appropriate degree of analytic guidance, innovation, and rigor (including QA/QC processes and resources) to multiple different types of analyses to support the expansion of RWI use across Astellas.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Builds and leads a team responsible for realizing the value of RWI through the ‘Analytics Service Center’
  • Responsible for working with other members in the RWI function to enable efficient and effective project execution for projects sourced from the business and scoped by the functional and regional interfaces within the RWI function
  • Responsible for managing the ‘Analytics Service Center’ to serve the broad needs of Astellas’ RWI customers across multiple geographies (US, Europe and Asia), multiple functions and multiple use cases (e.g. publications, internal decision making, hypothesis generation)
  • Design and lead deployment of the analytics services resource model consisting of internal and external resources in aggregate for the function and on individual projects

Quantitative Dimensions:

This position will have responsibility for the operating budget to build and maintain a group of internal and external resources for executing the analytics within the function. This includes managing budget for outsourced analyses up to $3MM.

Organizational Context:

This position reports directly to Astellas Executive Director RWI function and will have responsibility for a group of approximately seven individuals (mix of methodologists, programmers, statisticians and data scientists). Initially the entire RWI CoE organization will include a mix of internal and external (contract resources). With demonstrated success in the initial build out and expansion to grow as support for more diverse geographies, therapeutic areas and additional RWI demands.

Postdoctoral Research Position in Patient-Level Predictive Modelling

Full time: 36 hrs per week

Job description
The Department of Medical Informatics is looking for a Postdoc to perform cutting edge research in massive-scale, patient level predictive modelling. This type of big data analytics is becoming reality due to initiatives like the Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI) program which is a multi-stakeholder, interdisciplinary collaborative to bring out the value of health data through large-scale analytics (www.ohdsi.org), and the European Medical Information Framework (www.emif.org) which develops a collaborative framework for data sharing.

Responsibilities
The Postdoc will be responsible for developing novel methods and techniques to leverage the valuable information contained in the growing pool of Electronic Health Records (HER) data. This includes research in feature selection and feature engineering methods to deal with the by nature sparse and irregular-spaced data.

Work environment
The department of medical informatics is specialized in using routine healthcare data to study the effects of drugs. Large expertise has been built in using GP medical record data on more than a million patients in the Netherlands (the IPCI database: www.ipci.nl). Currently the department is coordinating and collaborating in several projects that aim at building EU and global wide linkage of databases.

Requirements
Candidates must have a PhD degree in biomedical informatics, bioinformatics, computer science, or statistics. Curriculum in and/or experience with data mining and machine learning as well as experience in programming and software development will be necessary for this opportunity. The candidate interested in this position must be highly motivated, willing to learn and demonstrate initiative in assigned tasks. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are crucial.

Healthcare Sr Data Scientist Position at Celgene

Celgene’s IKU (Information, Knowledge, Utilization) organization was formed to manage healthcare data as a core asset and harness its derived insights to drive decision-making across the entire organization; from research through to market access. The Senior Data Scientist is a key member of IKU’s data sciences team and conducts high-quality statistical and/or machine learning analyses utilizing real world evidence (RWE) and other healthcare-related data sources to answer exploratory questions and support Celgene goals, publication plans and cross-functional internal and external RWE collaborations.

The ideal candidate will be a seasoned data scientist with experience in large-scale healthcare data analysis. S/he will be experienced working in environments demanding diverse data sources, such as clinical trial data, electronic health record data, insurance claims data, and disease/patient registry data. The candidate must be hands-on and action oriented with a demonstrated ability to deliver on data-driven research projects. ELIXIR is an ESFRI Research Infrastructure and e-infrastructure project. ELIXIR includes 20 countries covering more than 180 research organisation all over Europe. The Belgian ELIXIR Node is led by VIB and its partners are the universities of Ghent, Leuven, Antwerp, Brussels, Hasselt and Liège. The infrastructure developed in this project will be one of the key services supported by the Belgian ELIXIR Node. Next to this, this project is embedded in an international project referred to as the MS Data Alliance (MSDA) project.   • Previous experience in working with large databases and knowledge of database specific languages such as SQL will be considered a plus.
  • You can think analytically and you have good communication skills so that you can summarize analytical insights clearly
  • You can work independently and yet be a team player too
  • English professional speaking and writing are required
  • Having working experience as a data scientist or statistician and having a PhD are assets
  • Proven interest in infectious diseases and in epidemiology are assets
  • Having authored several scientific papers is an asset
