Using OHDSI in the classroom

I am teaching a new “Big Data Analytics for Healthcare” graduate course for ECE/CS students at UT this fall, see
http://hercules.ece.utexas.edu/ghosh/bdah-f15.htm
which also links to the syllabus.

As part of this course, I’ll be using the CMS SynPUF dataset to illustrate various components of OHDSI, and have students (at least 35 enrolled) try out different codesets. The focus is mostly on patient-level prediction, and students will be encouraged to contribute new functionality to PLATO etc. as part of a term project.

  • Has anyone attempted such an exercise before?
Suggestions for other datasets that can be used in addition to SynPUF (and associated goals for predictive
    modeling)?
I’ll be also using MIMIC-II in the course but am not aware of a
    conversion of MIMIC to CDMv5?

I’ll be happy to provide feedback once the course is over.

Hi Joydeep,

I’m interested in patient-level prediction and would be glad to know how your experience with the course was.

Thanks in advance for sharing!

Best,
Harry

Hi Harry,
The PLP effort had not started last fall, so it was just on paper. We
mostly worked on Achilles, e.g. I gave an exercise where students had to
add a new visualization that is not present in Achilles, and Hermes a bit.
It worked fine on linux but there were some issues on Windows.
What datasets will you be using?

Hi Joydeep,

Sorry for the late reply. I won’t be teaching any course, but have been fiddling with MIMIC II and III for a while and wondered how it went with your course. Specifically, have you managed to solve the MIMIC to CDMv5 conversion issue?
