As an update to this initiative explained in the github issue discussion (link here), we presented the vocabulary in this weeks OHDSI Survey WG. Members of the group kindly took time to review and evaluate the contribution further. We have been able to develop a vocabulary build process for mapping the T1D Exchange diabetes specification tables to OMOP. T1D Exchange is a non profit organization, partnering 63+ pediatric organizations on quality improvement initiatives aiming to improve the quality of outcomes for people living with type I diabetes (T1D).
We have been able to develop a vocabulary build process to standardize and map the T1D Exchange diabetes specific tables to OMOP(please see the Github branch to this build here). The T1D Exchange data specification is presented in a survey format currently holding 4 modules, 70 Questions and 234 Answers. Only 13 Questions & 58 Answers have Standard equivalents. A current challenge we are facing arise from compound survey concepts (please see examples below). We would appreciate the OHDSI communities help on figuring out the best way to map these concepts and moving this initiative forward in the upcoming vocabulary release. Our current thoughts are to map them via ‘Has asso finding’, and store this in a separate lookup table. This table would act as an external ETL instruction and remain entirely separate from the Vocabulary build process.

We hope to make the most appropriate decision sooner rather than later (for the August 2026 release) as standardizing this vocabulary is key to improving Type I diabetes research efforts. Mapping the T1D Exchange data specification to OMOP expands collaborative research between T1D Exchange, its partnering organizations, and other organizations who may not be apart of the T1D exchange, but have diabetes data in the OMOP format. This initiative also extends interoperability between the Diabetes Data Dock, which uses the T1D Exchange data model as a standardized format.
The Diabetes Data Dock is a centralized platform that collects, standardize, and share diabetes-related data (such as glucose monitoring metrics and clinical outcomes) to support research, benchmarking, and improved clinical decision-making. It helps researchers and clinicians access consistent, high-quality data for analysis and collaboration.
