Questions about location_id from source EHR to OMOP

Hello everyone!!
My name is Beatriz Estrada. I am currently carrying out my thesis project on the transformation of an Electronic Health Record to OMOP in a hospital in the south of Chile.
My questions are the following:

  • In which OMOP field are you registering the nationalities? Considering that there are 18 different nationalities in the local RCE.
  • Are you considering the city or the country in the location_id field of the person table?
  • How are you entering the location of the care_site, with latitude and longitude, or just by city?

Hi @beatriz_estrada!

  1. Nationalities should be represented in PERSON table (field race_concept_id - the Vocabulary contains Concepts about the main races and ethnic backgrounds in a hierarchical system. Due to the imprecise nature of human races and ethnic backgrounds, this is not a perfect system. Mixed races are not supported. If a clear race or ethnic background cannot be established, use Concept_Id 0; field ethnicity_concept_id - this field captures Ethnicity as defined by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) of the US Government: it distinguishes only between “Hispanic” and “Not Hispanic”. Races and ethnic backgrounds are not stored here.).
  2. Put the location_id from the LOCATION table here that represents the most granular location information for the person.
  3. To fill in location information into CARE_SITE table you should previously fill in the information into LOCATION table. The full list of this table fields and the rules you can find in OMOP CDM (OMOP CDM v5.4). CARE_SITE table contains only location_id field from LOCATION table.

@Varvara_Savitskaya As you mention, it is very difficult to determine race or ethnicity. In this case, I will leave those fields out, thank you very much for your response.
