Logic Description : Depression disorder patients indexed on prescription date of a first-line anti-depressant preceded by at least two prior first-line anti-depressants) or indexed on an antipsychotic preceded by a first-line anti-depressant or indexed on use of esketamine preceded by a first-line anti-depressant subset to the earliest entry with a depressive disorder diagnosis in the prior year and no history of mania, dementia, or psychosis requiring continuous enrollment for the year preceding the index date and the year preceding the depression diagnosis cohort exit is the end of continuous observation.

Target Clinical Description : Recurrent major depressive disorder (MDD) is a chronic disabling condition associated with high morbidity and appreciable mortality whose 12-month prevalence is estimated as 8% in the US and 3% to 6% in Europe . Its treatment often includes antidepressant (AD) medications and a substantial proportion of pharmaceutically treated depression (PTD) does not respond adequately to treatment with two or more antidepressant (AD) medications despite adequate dose, duration, and adherence to the antidepressant medications . Such cases are considered to have treatment resistant depression (TRD) [4] and carry higher personal and societal costs than do treatment-responsive MDD
