LOINC to CPT

Would it be possible to add loinc to cpt as a vocabulary_relationship? Draft mapping is available at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/research/umls/mapping_projects/loinc_to_cpt_map.html

@DTorok:

We were actually thinking of adding this mapping: https://loinc.org/news/draft-loinc-snomed-ct-mappings-and-expression-associations-now-available.html/.

Why do you need it? What’s the use case?

I contacted NLM Cust. Service and this was their reply

Dear Vojtech Huser,

The RRF format is a pipe delimited text file. You can open it with any text editor.

The map is dated 2005, it works in the direction of
orderable LOINC codes to CPT billing codes, and there are no current plans to
update it. Most likely you do not want to use it in a production setting.

The README file is a separate text download on the same
page.

For more information about the RRF format, see that
chapter in the UMLS Reference Manual: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK9685/. You will see sections about the various files
and field names as well as sample data.

Please open the file and review it then reply to this
message with your questions and we will forward them to the correct
person. We suggest that you review the
background information on the downloads page as well.

We know the format. We put it in. Couple weeks ok?

Friends:

Will release the LOINC to SNOMED and LOINC to CPT4 maps this week. There are caveats:

  • Only about 2k are mapped (out of 10k LOINC codes)
  • The project linking LOINC to SNOMED did this for the hierarchies. Which means it linked to the entity that is being measured. Not the procedures.
  • The project linking LOINC to CPT4 did the same thing, but for the low-level LOINC codes. But again, a lot of those maps are to drugs, substances, microorganisms, etc., as opposed to what we need, which is the procedure on the patient that leads to the measurement.

Have fun with it.
