Genomic-CDM and viral variants?

I’m looking at the Genomic-CDM tables (GitHub - OHDSI/Genomic-CDM: Repository for development of the genomic module of the CDM.) and see that the noted vocabularies and naming conventions are focused on human genomes (HGNC, HGVS). Is there any active effort for considering variant representation for other species? …namely viral variants.
I am supporting an observational study where there is a need to label COVID-19 viral variants. Has anyone tried using this, or the current OMOP tables to handle viral variants? If so, how did you handle the representation?
