Do you recommend to use the vocabulary for mapping ICD-9-CM to ICD-9-CM codes (and vice versa) by joining on CONCEPT_ID?
No, the standard vocabulary for conditions is SNOMED, so we have
ICD9->SNOMED mappings and ICD10->SNOMED, but because these are directional
mappings, you should not map ICD9->ICD10 via SNOMED.
Thanks @Patrick_Ryan. Is there any plan to add the crosswalk to vocabulary in future? We are using GEMs mapping but need to incorporate the relationships in the CDM.
No!!! Mappings are strictly from concepts (non standard or standard) to standard concepts. That’s how the CDM Vocabularies work. We will retire the legacy direct mappings to non standards still in there. The CMS provides that ICD9 to 10 mapping, if you need one.
@Christian_Reich: We are using the CMS’ cross walk outside of the CDM but need to bring it in for some use cases. Thanks for the info!
