Correct Use of County Codes

This may be a simple question, but I’m building an OMOP ETL application and I’m a little unclear on the use of county codes in the location table. I have the SynPUF Codebook, which explains that each state has three-digit county codes that need to be combined with the state code to get the specific county. Does this mean that it won’t be necessary to map the source county codes to anything, and I can just insert them into the location table in their source form?

Thanks!

@jtribuna:

I am not familiar with how it works, but it sounds like you put the state into the field state (2-letter abbrevition) and the county information into the field county. Any reason why not?

The location information really is not normalized in the CDM. Whatever information you have you put into the fields given, and when you have analytical tools that want to use lcoation information for either stratifying or adjusting it will take the records the way you put them in. In other words, each location record is its own thing. Where that location is and whether you can combine locations hierarchically is not covered or prepared for in the CDM.
