Using vocabulary 4.5, specifically when looking up ICD-9 codes the predominate mapping types are Condition and Indication. What is the difference? Do they both belong in the Condition Occurrence table?
Don:
Condition is the propler domain for diagnoses, signs and symptoms. Indication is a specialized small list of conditions defined by the providers of drug class information (NDFRT and FDB), so they are a drug class (standard_concept=‘C’) of the domain “Drug”. So, they don’t belong anywhere in the standardardized data tables. They are only useful for querying.
It’d be probably more logical to make them a classification in the Condition domain. However, nothing would change, really. Because you want to use the CONCEPT_ANCESTOR table to ask “Give me all drugs with Indication X”, but you also would like to ask “Give me all conditions that fall under Indication X”. And currently the ancestry is not supposed to cross domains. We have to think about that.
