Call for participation: OHDSI network study on nitrofurantoin-associated pulmonary toxicity

Dear OHDSI Community,

I would like to announce a proposed network study using OMOP CDM databases to investigate nitrofurantoin-associated pulmonary toxicity.

This study aims to:

  1. Estimate the real-world incidence of pulmonary toxicity using tiered outcome definitions.

  2. Compare risks across nitrofurantoin exposure patterns, including short-course, recurrent, and prolonged/prophylactic use.

  3. Identify high-risk patient phenotypes, such as patients with renal dysfunction, frailty, or prior lung disease.

We are looking for data partners who have access to OMOP CDM databases and, ideally, a local ATLAS environment.

In this project, we plan to use ATLAS to define and execute study cohorts and to perform cohort characterization.

Since nitrofurantoin is not commonly prescribed for urinary tract infections in Korea, we were unable to identify a sufficient number of exposed patients or conduct a reliable feasibility assessment using local data.

Therefore, we are seeking collaborators and data partners with OMOP CDM databases that include at least 1,000 patients exposed to nitrofurantoin and who may be able to run this study in their local environment.

We would ask participating data partners to run the cohort definitions and execute the analysis package in their local OMOP CDM environment.

We will provide the study protocol, concept sets, cohort definitions, and executable analysis scripts once finalized.

Please feel free to reply to this thread or contact us at cheehee25@yuhs.ac .

Thank you.
