ATC to RxNorm mappings

Our goal is to map ATC5 (ATC 5th Level) concepts to RxNorm.

We are using the latest August 2024 Vocabulary release.

I was reviewing these 2 posts
Searching ATC
ATC Release

And it’s not clear which table we should be using for these mappings: CONCEPT_RELATIONSHIP or CONCEPT_ANCESTOR

As example, we want to map Atorvastatin from ATC5 to it’s equivalent in RxNorm.
ATC5: code: C10AA05 concept_ID: 21601860

For CONCEPT_RELATIONSHIP I see these various relationship types and counts for Atorvastatin, but we do not know which relationship to use:

relationship_id count
ATC - RxNorm 20
ATC - RxNorm pr lat 1
Drug class of drug 288
Maps to 1

Or Perhaps we should be using CONCEPT_ANCESTOR ?

Thanks for any guidance, Jeff

Anything wrong with the unambiguous “Maps to”?

CONCEPT_ANCESTOR is if you are using ATC as a class of drug products. But you want to just walk from ATC5 (mostly ingredients, but not only!!!) to RxNorm ingredient. “Maps to” is your friend.

I also love pointing to our documentation on GitHub Wiki for awarness. In ATC docs we made sure to answer this common question: Vocab. ATC · OHDSI/Vocabulary-v5.0 Wiki · GitHub

@Christian_Reich , @aostropolets - Thanks to both of you, this is helpful. I had not seen the ATC5 wiki document !
