APAC-VALUE Study: A global characterization of VALproate Utilization and Exposure

The OHDSI APAC community is launching a collaborative, large-scale federated network study as part of the 2026 OHDSI APAC Symposium, and we warmly invite you to join us.

APAC-VALUE Study aims to investigate how the use of valproate has evolved across different regions, particularly in response to growing global safety warnings. Valproate has long been an effective therapy for epilepsy; however, increasing global regulatory attention has raised concerns about potential neurodevelopmental risks in children exposed in utero. More recently, some regulatory agencies have also issued warnings regarding preconception exposure in men, while others have not, creating important variation across regions.

Leveraging the OHDSI federated research model, this study will utilize harmonized data mapped to the OMOP Common Data Model, enabling consistent and reproducible analyses across multiple countries without sharing patient-level data. Through this work, we aim to characterize utilization patterns, treatment pathways, and population-level differences among men and women of childbearing age, and to better understand how regulatory actions translate into real-world clinical practice across different regulatory jurisdictions.

Participants will engage in a series of structured sessions designed to guide the study from concept to interpretation:

  • April 16 (C.C): Kick off
  • May 7 (S.F): Theory on characterization and treatment pathways
  • May 21 (C.C): Review of treatment guidelines
  • June 4 (S.F): Framing the research questions
  • June 18 (C.C): Protocol
  • July 2 (S.F): Building characterization and treatment pathways in ATLAS
  • July 16 (C.C): Execution
  • August 6 (S.F): Introduction to Strategus
  • August 20 (C.C): Interpretation

This is a unique opportunity to collaborate with a global network of OHDSI researchers while contributing to a high-impact, multi-regional federated study. Participants will also gain hands-on experience with OHDSI tools, including ATLAS, and help generate evidence that may inform regulatory and clinical decision-making.

We welcome participants from across the OHDSI community, including clinicians, epidemiologists, data scientists, and students. If you are interested in joining or would like to learn more, please reach out via the OHDSI APAC Teams environment or contact Gaeun (OHDSI email: gaeunlee).

Thanks Gaeun
To add some more context to @gaeunlee’s post

C.C and S.F stand for Community Call and Scientific Forum respectively
We run both as regular OHDSI APAC meeting series — links below:

We’ll be using both spaces to share progress updates and keep the conversation going. See you there!
