Admission Source - Newborns and Transfers Between/Within Hospitals

Looking for Admission Source mapping guidance for the following:

-Newborns- I can see 0 or a Hospital concept making sense. Is there a prescribed approach?
-We have the following source concepts: “Transfer from a Hospital (Different Facility)” and “Transfer from One Distinct Unit to another Distinct Unit in Same Hospital”. A Hospital concept such as 38004515 Hospital Medicare Specialty could make sense for both but there is no way to differentiate that one originated outside of this facility and one originated within. Same situation regarding use of this concept for newborns.

I attempted to find documentation for this decision making but am new to OHDSI so may have missed something…

We currently don’t have conventions in our Themis convention library for your questions.

The ‘admitted_from….’ fields are nullable fields, you do not have to put any value in the field. And if you don’t have a use case / study question, then I would leave these fields NULL and populate them when the need arises.

For the babies born in the hospital, I think 0 makes the most sense. Everyone knows a baby born in the hospital came from a woman’s womb.

For this:

concept_id = 38004515 will suffice. The VISIT_OCCURRENCE.care_site_id field will link you to which hospital the person was admitted from.
