OHDSI Community Call 23Fed2016

Hi everyone,

Here is the agenda for tomorrow’s OHDSI call:

  1. Introduction of OHDSI newcomers
  • Updates
  • IEEE on Feb 24-27 - Who’s going?
  • HISMIS16 next week - Who’s going?
  • Discussion - @Christian_Reich will lead us in a discussion about conducting OHDSI network studies. We’ll be asking questions such as:
  • What are the barriers to conducting network research?
  • How can we facilitate more research?

If there is anything else you’d like to discuss tomorrow, please reply to this thread.

Thanks to everyone who joined today’s OHDSI call. We had a very insightful discussion about conducting OHDSI network research and current barriers. If you missed today’s call, a recording has been posted here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3MHvw659x1kTnUtMlJaTHF5bDQ/view

To briefly summarize the conversation, we discussed that once data has been converted, the OHDSI infrastructure is in place and IRB approval has been granted, running studies becomes easier. However, getting to this stage requires a lot of hand holding and several barriers exist:

  • Lack of resources to get set up (programmers, time, funding)
  • More guidance needed on setting up the tools
  • More guidance needed for getting IRB approval

In terms of conducting the studies, these barriers were also identified:

  • Difficult to communicate with data holders (need an OHDSI directory)
  • No worked examples of studies that have been successfully run across the network
  • Issues with running studies on both CDMv4 and v5
  • Need to create environment where people feel comfortable posting their research protocols on open forum

If there are other barriers that have been preventing you from getting setup with OHDSI, or from running studies, let us know by replying to this thread.
