Introduction Erik Koning

I am a clinical epidemiologist from the Netherlands, currently working at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). My main research focus is pain assessment in preterm infants, where I work on improving how we measure and interpret clinical outcomes in this highly vulnerable population.

Recently, I have become interested in the OMOP Common Data Model approach and broader efforts around standardized vocabularies and data harmonization within the OHDSI community. This has sparked my interest in how we can make real-world clinical data more interoperable, reproducible, and scalable across sites.

I am currently exploring the use of these principles in a federated learning setting, with ongoing work in Cork, aiming to enable multi-site analyses without centralizing patient-level data.

I am looking forward to learning from the community, particularly around best practices for OMOP mapping in neonatal and paediatric datasets, as well as approaches for handling complex outcomes such as pain and sedation. I also hope to contribute where possible to methodological work and collaborative studies.
