Vassilis Koutkias received the diploma in electrical and computer engineering in 1998 and the MSc and PhD degrees in medical informatics in 2001 and 2005, respectively, all from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Thessaloniki, Greece. His research interests include information management, knowledge engineering and decision support systems, as well as pervasive computing, with major application areas drug safety and personalized healthcare. He is currently a Research Scientist with the Institute of Applied Biosciences, at the Centre of Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH). From 2013-2015, he was granted an individual Marie Curie fellowship for experienced researchers (the SAFER project: http://safer-project.eu), with INSERM (U1142, Paris, FRANCE). Since 2000, he conducted R&D in more than 15 large-scale EU-funded R&D projects in the fields of patient safety, personal health systems, Ambient Assisted Living and eInclusion, with the Lab of Medical Informatics, AUTH, and the Institute of Applied Biosciences, CERTH. He has been also appointed as a Visiting Lecturer in University Paris 6 (UPMC), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Hellenic Open University, and University of Western Macedonia. He is co-author of one book, co-editor of two books, and author/co-author of more than 120 papers in peer-reviewed international journals, book series and conference proceedings. He currently serves as Associate Editor for the BMC Medical Informatics & Decision Making journal.
