Greg Hruby’s work seems to be generally relevant to this topic. http://gregorywhruby.com/
Specifically, he has many papers related to the challenges of query mediation, that is, translating a general research question into executable form. His dissertation is a very helpful read since it describes the entire shape of the query mediation process.
